Common Misconceptions About Civilian Employees

There are several common misconceptions about working for the Federal government as a Civilian employee. One prevalent myth is that all federal jobs are located in Washington, D.C., whereas only about 1 in 6 federal employees actually work in the Washington D.C. metro area. Another misconception is that Federal employees are overpaid and underworked; however, Federal salaries are generally comparable to those in the private sector, and many Federal employees work long hours to meet the demands of their roles. Additionally, some people believe that Federal jobs lack opportunities for advancement, but many agencies offer robust career development programs and clear paths for promotion. These myths can obscure the many benefits and opportunities that come with Federal employment.

LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE - Help for Mom and Dad
Whether you’re caring for a parent, a spouse, a sibling, another family member or a close friend, there may come a time when you must consider long-term care.
The purpose of long-term care insurance is to cover expenses associated with long-term senior care services and support, whether the care is provided at home or in an assisted living community, skilled nursing facility or other senior care setting.
Long-term care insurance policy reimburses you to cover the cost of skilled nursing care; speech, physical and rehabilitation therapy; or services used to assist with activities of daily living. In addition to coverage for yourself, benefits may also be extended to qualified relatives.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS - Keep More of Your Money
All NETCOM employees are eligible to enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) which can be used to pay for many medical and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars. Dependent Care FSA can pay for daycare, summer camps, and even compensate non-dependent family members for watching your kids while you are at work. Health Care FSA can be used for big purchases like orthodontics or medical equipment, or smaller items like over-the counter medicines, insurance co-pays and deductibles, and even items like bandages, thermometers, and sunscreen. These programs help you plan for expenses, lower your tax liability and keep more money in your wallet.

LIFE INSURANCE - Adulting Made Easier
You have probably heard it many times—responsible adults should have life insurance.  Life insurance is important to cover final expenses, outstanding debts, and help replace your income for your spouse or family in the event of your death. NETCOM makes it easier.  NETCOM employees are automatically enrolled in the Federal Employee Group Life Insurance “basic” plan.  This plan provides a payout of one year of your salary. If you are under 35, the benefit payout is doubled at no extra cost.  There are additional options to increase or extend coverage to your spouse or children. The cost is just a few dollars a pay check and is partially supplemented by the federal government.  If you enroll right away, there is no requirement for a medical exam or other limitations on participation.

Work-Life Balance:

  ►

The NETCOM family goes beyond the employees that work at Department of the Army locations – it includes spouses, children, parents, and other loved ones that support or depend on our employees. NETCOM recognizes the importance of balancing the requirements of their Civilian positions with the needs of its employees and their families.

  ►

Family and Work-Life Balance - Balancing the demands of commute times, school schedules, elder care, and health and wellness needs along with work can be challenging.  NETCOM offers a multitude of flexibilities to support employees in easing these stresses so that they can meet the needs of both home and work.

  ►

Job Security and Stability – As part of the Federal workforce, NETCOM employees enjoy the job security and stability that the Federal Government has to offer.

  ►

Telework Options – Many employees within NETCOM are eligible to work from home based on the duties of their position. The number of days one can work from home depends on the mission of NETCOM and the team’s needs. NETCOM has found that telework options greatly support the needs of its workforce to balance priorities at work and home, reduces commute times, and decrease the office footprint. This flexibility has been widely used throughout the Department during the COVID-19 Pandemic to increase workplace safety and support the family needs of our employees during this unprecedented time.

  ►

Flexible and Alternate Work Schedules - NETCOM recognizes that employees in its workforce all have different needs for supporting themselves and their families at home. That is why NETCOM offers many work schedules, from working a compressed schedule that allows for additional days off or a maxi-flex schedule to accommodate varying start and end times. Many types of schedules are available to choose from to accommodate the needs of the team and the supervisor.

  ►

Health and Wellness Programs - Each NETCOM location has varying health and wellness programs to support the workforce. These include on-site gym memberships, exercise classes, nutrition workshops, mental health programs, and more!

  ►

Employee Assistance Programs – NETCOM provides confidential employee assistance services to all employees free of charge. Trained counselors provide services assisting with family matters, work conflicts, mental health, financial concerns, addiction, and other concerns.
